Other Important 2008 Races
Let's not mince words, shall we? Tom Reynolds is a freaking disaster. I live in the 26th Congressional District of NY, and Rep. Reynolds is supposed to represent my interests in Congress. He doesn't--no way, no how.
Reynolds is a Bush team player, meaning he does unconscionable things like voting against health care for poor children, not once, but four times. Reynolds is, of course, anti-choice and votes for almost any bill that seeks to restrict women’s rights and against any bill to expand those rights.
In the past, Reynolds has voted 0 percent of the time for bills that Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro choice America wanted passed. On the other hand, he’s voted for all the bills that the National Right to Life Committee was pushing. Ditto the National Rifle Association.
Remember the Mark Foley sex scandal? Reynolds was up to his neck in that, and presently is enmeshed in another HUGE scandal involving stolen money that went missing when he was head of the National Republican Congressional Committee. The moral to this story is: Reynolds Must Go.
Presently three people are vying for the chance to take Reynolds down: Jon Powers (a cute, young Iraq war vet, who knows next to nothing about women’s issues. He’s learning, he says.), Jack Davis (a not so young, but very rich businessman, who has run twice before against Reynolds), and Alice Kryzan (a baby-boomer who graduated from the University of Chicago school of law and served as the Board President of Planned Parenthood of Western New York and was on the Steering Committee of the Women’s TAP Fund, a group that supports pro-choice women candidates for state and local office).
All three candidates put in an appearance at the snowy February 26th meeting of the Greece Democratic Committee held at Greece Athena Restaurant. Here’s a bit of what I learned at that meeting:
* Jack Davis has two million dollars burning a hole in his pocket and wants to spend it on yet another run against Tom Reynolds, his third try. Davis supports a women’s right to legal abortion.
* Jon Powers is cute and doesn’t know squat about women’s reproductive health issues. He says he is being tutored on the subject.
* Alice Kryzan has spent 30 years as an environmental attorney, and thinks Jon Powers is wet behind the ears when it comes to women's issues.
