City school district disappoints Santorum, goes ahead and okays condoms

From today's "Doonesbury" cartoon:  Republicans are engaging in yet another Presidental primary debate.  The moderator asks the participants to finish the sentence, "The problem with America today is we have too many..."

Mitt Romney: "Regulations."  Ron Paul:  "Roads."  Rick Santorum:  "Condoms."

Well, Santorum will not be happy at all about the Rochester City School District's decision to allow students to get condoms in their schools.  Read more about the school board's decision here.  (Incidentally, one of the board members who voted yes is Willa Powell, a NOW member.")

On Sunday, which was the 39th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision known as Roe v. Wade, Rochester NOW staged a reading of selections from Linda Greenhouse and Reva B. Siegel's book "Before Roe v. Wade: Voices that shaped the abortion debate before the Supreme Court ruling" at MuCCC on Atlantic Avenue. 

Linda, who now teaches law at Yale, after reporting on the Supreme Court for the NY Times for many years, sent me this message earlier today:

In an important decision that ensures access to affordable birth control for millions of women, including those who get insurance coverage through a religiously affiliated hospital, university, or other religiously affiliated organization that serves the broader public, the Obama administration announced today that it would not expand an unconstitutional refusal clause that will already deny contraceptive coverage to some women under the Affordable Care Act. NOW thanks the many activists and women's rights supporters around the country who flooded the White House and the Department of Health and Human Services with messages urging the administration to remove -- not expand -- that refusal clause.
