We Need Your Financial Support
The Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley (GAGV) is undertaking an exciting and important community project – producing Shoulders To Stand On: The History of the Gay Community in Rochester, New York. This Community Project belongs to you – members of the GLBT Community and the Greater Rochester Community.
Upstate New York, the birthplace of the Suffragist and Abolitionist movements of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, and the Progressive Era Social Gospel Movement of Rev. Walter Rouschenbush, continues to be in the forefront of the struggle for full civil rights for all. The GAGV wants to be sure that the record of this work and its impact on Rochester and the Genesee Valley region survives as a part of New York State’s rich cultural, political, social and economic history.
So why is Shoulders to Stand On: A Gay History of the Rochester Region so vital to you? And why should you contribute to it?
Shoulders to Stand On will provide a sense of rootedness, strength and pride through the stories, struggles and achievements of gay pioneers. Those who have come before us often made important sacrifices to make Rochester a better place for us to live. Shoulders To Stand On will show the many faces that put the gay liberation movement into motion and have continued the struggle. Documenting our history gives us credibility as a community with economic, social and political power. By safeguarding Rochester’s gay history, it will be available to teach and inspire future generations. Shoulders To Stand On will demonstrate our continued faithfulness to our struggle to be free and equal.
The estimated budget for this project approaches $200,000. Every person and every dollar counts and will be recognized. Contribute what you can afford but contribute. Every contribution will be recognized.
