Hello, friends. Let me start off by introducing myself, if I may. I am Victoria C. Abdulla, and I intern at NOW – NYS. I got involved with NOW because, frankly, I am not sure that I can remember a time when women’s issues weren’t at the forefront of my mind. Perhaps, what I find most intriguing is the representation of women in the all-encompassing “media,” that arguably tries to rule our society.
So, pop culture. A phenomenon unlike any other. A cut-throat, sexualized, exploited, and highly in-your-face element of our world. Because the majority of us didn’t take any pointers from our favorite transcendentalist-extraordinaire, H.D. Thoreau, and completely seclude ourselves from every day society in a sweet cabin by a sweet pond, we are constantly exposed to larger-than-life images. “Images of what?” you ask? I’ll tell you. Whether from film, television, radio, or cyberspace, images of “weak,” “inferior,” and “sexualized” women are thrust upon us. We (alright, you got me – sometimes even me) get tricked into thinking that these images of super skinny women in designer clothing at uber trendy nightspots of Hollywood and the like, are something to emulate, or strive for.
