Workshops
11:30 am - 12:30 pm - Chapter Development: Join current NOW leaders to discuss successes and challenges of chapter development. This workshop is for leaders who want to exchange ideas about activism and those who are interested in starting a NOW chapter in their community. Workshop Presenters: Lori Gardner, Alberta Roesser
11:30 am - 12:30 pm - (Location: Ballroom) The Matriarch Within You: Having the Power to Change the World: We need every woman to join us in the fight for equality. We need you to bring your unique talents, whether a different prospective from another culture or religion, or insight from your generation. The power within you can be (re)awakened. Join our speakers as they discuss ways for women to use their personal power to move mountains, relating their experience as veteran feminists, or using their tech skills as a young feminist. Workshop Presenters: Zenaida Mendez, Jerin Alam
12:45 pm - 1:45 pm - (Location: Ballroom) The Burqa: A Free Choice or a Forced Choice? Prison or Protection? Today there is much heated discussion around the world about the Islamic Veil. Is it a private religious right? A free choice or a forced choice? Is it a form of oppression? Is the headscarf (hijab), which covers the ears and feels “tight,” the niqab (face mask), jilbab and abaya (long shapeless body garments) and the burqa and chadari (body bags) both oppressive and hazardous to female physical and mental health? As feminists we have historically advocated for women to make their own choices. But how do we sit idly by and ignore the subordination and separation of women in our countries as well as the health hazards of the burqa? Join the discussion about why it is important for feminists to embrace universal human rights for women.
Workshop Presenters: Dr. Phyllis Chesler, Marcia Pappas
